Cherie Lei Mercado-Santos, professionally known as Cherie Mercado, is a veteran journalist who built her broadcast news career working with the top TV networks in the Philippines. She started in GMA7 28 years ago, moved on to ABS-CBN as a news correspondent, host, and segment producer. Her ABSCBN years were best remembered for her efficient yet sober coverage of breaking news from the field. She was said to be one of the freshest faces on Philippine TV, and her objective and balanced delivery was welcomed as a breath of fresh air.
When she got married in 2004, she also moved networks. She anchored ABC5’s « The Big News » while pregnant with her first child. She hosted flagship news programs until the channel rebranded as TV5. She gave birth to her second daughter in 2010. She left TV5 in 2016 to serve the Philippine government as spokesperson and assistant secretary for the Department of Transportation. She went back to broadcast news in 2017, this time with CNN Philippines. “CNN’s Newsroom Ngayon” won Best TV Newscast, during her stint, at the 27th Golden Dove Awards in July 2019.
Cherie took further studies in Film and finished with honors from Centennial College’s Story Arts Department. She is currently based in Toronto, working as a producer and host for Filipino TV (FTV)- the first and only all-Filipino cable channel in Canada.
